I just finished reading Nesly Clerge’s new book entitled “When the Serpent Bites” and I loved it. Mr. Clerge has written an interesting story of tragedy and deceit that you won’t want to stop reading. I normally read during my lunch break at work and I found myself squeezing in as many pages as I could during the one-hour time slot. Mr. Clerge’s writing style is crisp and smooth and slightly tugs you along and I just couldn’t wait to see what would happen next.The story is about an engineer/entrepreneur named Frederick Starks who is a wealthy, self-made-man who started from humble beginnings. We are allowed to see situations from early childhood through the present which builds Starks into a well developed and colorful character. Starks has an interesting personality that allows him to be judge-jury-executioner when it comes to other people while overlooking his own indiscretions. The story starts with a bang when Starks confronts a man who is having an affair with his wife and then his life (and the story) spiral out of control from that point on.
I won’t tell you too many specifics about the story because there are some massive twists-and-turns in the storyline and I don’t want to spoil it for you. But over all you get to experience treachery and violence, a legal trial, incarceration, back stabbing by those around him and personal transformation all in one book. I must have said ‘I didn’t see that coming…’ one hundred times while reading this book. And the best thing about “When the Serpent Bites” is that Mr. Clerge leaves the story in such a way that we feel closure but we are also excited that there is more to come. Read it. You’ll love it.

Well, Nesly Clerge, you managed to get me involved with all the characters, especially the main character. I do hope you make this into a series, otherwise, I will wonder for years to come what happens next. The main character is a complex man, who seems to be able to adapt to being in prison after the straw that broke the camel's back caused him to snap, and since he has to be there, he may as well run things inside his own orbit. Being locked up forces him to take a good look at his own faults, as well as those he feels have sinned against him. He has two things going for him, his head for negotiation and his wealth, and money is what speaks loudest to both guards and prisoners alike. I hope to see a second book (and perhaps many more also) that picks up where this one left off. Kudos to you, Mr. Clerge. You may just have become one of my short list of favorite authors.
When you come across a book with a captivating and intriguing cover such as WHEN THE SERPENT BITES, you hope the story lives up to the cover.
It does.
In my opinion, the lead character, Starks is more of an anti-hero. I didn't really like him at first. But then he grew on me. He's a well-drawn, complicated character. He has such a strong fixation on his ex, Kayla, that it lands him in prison. Although he is a rich man, he still finds himself having to serve time.
I originally thought that it would be a story of redemption and letting go, with just a small amount of time being spent in prison. But instead, the majority of the book is spent behind bars. Even then, Starks is obsessed with his cheating wife and what she's doing with "his money."
In the end, Starks doesn't get let out, but assimilates himself into the prison population and becomes someone to be reckoned with.He transitions into someone he never saw himself as, and symbolizes it with a tattoo, (and not the one you'd expect).
The stage is set for the second installment.
Strong, engrossing story with believable, real characters described so well, you can visualize them standing in front of you.
A real treat.
Wow! What a ride! Mild-mannered successful CEO Fred Starks has everything going his way - lots of money, beautiful mansion, cars, boats, beautiful wife, 3 childen, mistress... you name it. Until one night when his rage over his wife's infidelity gets the best of him, and he finds himself in prison for 15 years. Now he has to adjust to a very different reality, one that is not in his control. The story is a real page-turner, with an out-of-nowhere-gee-I-didn't-see-that-coming ending! This is the first book of a trilogy, and I can't wait to get started on book 2!

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. Well written with nary a wasted word. So why only 3 stars? There wasn't a SINGLE character I liked. Not one. I realize that all (or many) great books need a character you love to hate.
But from the outset, there wasn't a character I liked or could relate to. The ex-wife is a gold-digging tramp and Star's (main protagonist) could likely be diagnosed as having Anti-social personality disorder and is a misogynistic player.By the end of the book, I was hoping he'd get shanked himself.
Perhaps due to having had to work with and for antisocial psychopaths (many are in the upper echelon of business) I am sensitive to seeing the thinking patterns of such people
Star's lacks even a sliver of introspection or recognition that he has as much guilt on his hands as Kayla has. Yet we only see brief snippets of her side, usually filtered through Stark's twisted mind.
Having said all that, I cannot rate this higher than 3 stars. If you can handle reading about descriptable people, you won't be disappointed. The ploy flows fairly coherently and seems well written. The first couple of pages will draw you in, just let & enjoy!
