Scott Lockwood is one of several authors who have written “new” mystery novels featuring juvenile detectives Barclay “Brains” Benton and Jimmy Carson, characters who were created by Charles Veral, and were originally featured in a series of six books first published in 1959 through 1961.A Scandal at Crestwood College is Lockwood’s follow up to his first Benton and Carson adventure. The time frame appears to be about same, set sometime in the early 1960’s. This adventure involves Jimmy’s sister Ann, a student at Crestwood College, who is wrongfully accused of stealing the answers to exam questions, and then selling them to other students.
Naturally the Benton and Carson Detective Agency becomes involved in an effort to prove Ann’s innocence. The investigation soon produces results and the parents of both boys also become involved, as matters take a rather dark turn, which eventually concludes with Brains and Jimmy facing some life threatening situations.
After reading The Case of the Courier Cat, I felt that Scott Lockwood did a fairly good job of recreating the feel of the original stories, and capturing the essence of “X” (Benton) and “Operative Three” (Carson). I was not however very comfortable where the story ultimately went, and the way it concluded. Since some fifty years had passed, I gave the author’s attempt at updating these characters the benefit of the doubt.
In Scandal At Crestwood, once again Lockwood does a pretty good job of characterization, and sets up his story nicely. Jimmy and Brains have almost no down time, as their investigation is quite active and quickly produces results. A twist at the halfway point is not that big of a surprise, but as he did in his previous book, the author raises the level of violence to a surprising level for a juvenile mystery.
Having read Lockwood’s first two novels, both which feature violent deaths, I wonder who the target audience is. It is today’s teen reader, or someone like myself who is older, and is familiar with the original Brains Benton novels? While I appreciate the author’s efforts, his stories have some dark elements that seem questionable for YA fiction.
If you are in that small group that is familiar with the original series, and would like to revisit the past, you may find that Lockwood’s books are worth your time. I did enjoy the trip down memory lane, but in both instances the conclusion of the journey was not entirely satisfying.
As of this date, Scott Lockwood has written a third Benton book, . I have not read it, but it apparently features Benton and Carson as adults. There is apparently no “official” sequel to the Brains Benton series, and other authors, most notably Charles E. Morgan III have also written Brains Benton novels prior to Mr. Lockwood.
